On the eve of the Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, I will present a brief overview of how climate science has evolved since the publication of the Charney Report in 1979, and use a few examples from my recent work to show how one can use numerical models, observations and theories to advance the fundamental understanding of Earth’s climate system.
