ABSTRACT

Neural disorders, old age, and traumatic injuries limit the ability of humans to perform activities of daily living. Robotics can be used to characterize and retrain human neuromuscular responses. Columbia University Robotics and Rehabilitation (ROAR) Laboratory designs innovative robots and performs scientific studies to improve everyday human functions such as standing, walking, stairclimbing, reaching, head turning, and others. Human experiments have targeted individuals with stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and elderly subjects. The talk will provide an overview of some of these robotic technologies and scientific studies performed with them to show the potential of rehabilitation robotics to improve quality of life of people around the world.
